March 2012 tally sheet with pictures

Here is a sample tally sheet to use with younger children to vote on the Goldfinch award. There are pictures of each book cover. It can be used with any grade, but works great with both Kindergarten and Preschool students. The students point to the book they select as their favorite, by looking at the book covers. One option is to have a color one printed out that the students point to, and then an adult can write the tally marks on another sheet.(So the students don’t see how the other students have voted.)

2011-2012 Goldfinch Information:

Even though all publishers confirmed they would have enough books to fill our orders, two Goldfinch award books are in limited supply and the publisher now says they will not be reprinting. The books are:

            2185306            Let’s Do Nothing

            2184506            Creaky Old House

Both of these books are on the poster. The new price for the Goldfinch Award set is $196.13

These two books will still be in the running for the Goldfinch Award for those sites who wish to vote on them.

New Award - 2010!

The Iowa Association of School Librarians has added the Goldfinch Award as an award given by PreK-3rd grade students in the state of Iowa. In the past the Iowa Children¹s Choice Award, Iowa Teen Award, and Iowa High School Book Award have been very popular. This award extends what is already being done by the IASL to encourage children to read more quality books, provide a positive dialogue about books, and give recognition to those who write books for children.

To be eligible to vote students in the participating grades must read or have read to them five books off the list.
Books are added to the list from student nominations and reviewed by Goldfinch Award committee members.

This is a great opportunity to promote more quality books to children in Iowa and hopefully many libraries take advantage
of this program and participate.

VOTING INFORMATION

Voting Regulations
1. Students must read at least five titles to be eligible to vote. It is acceptable for students to read these themselves or have heard them read aloud.

2. Students may vote for only one title and may not vote for any title they have not read or heard read.

3. Voting will be conducted on ballots produced by each attendance center.  A sample will be available closer to the date to use as an option, but is not required.

The voting deadline will be in the spring at the same time as the other Iowa Awards. Voting may be tabulated online through the ICCA website.
